Dental crowns - also referred to as dental caps - are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or dental implants. Generally used to entirely cover a damaged tooth or an implant, dental crowns add strength to a damaged tooth, while also improving a tooth's appearance, shape, alignment and dental occlusion (bite).
When a dental crown is recommended, it could be due to one of several reasons: the patient has a particularly weak tooth that needs to be held together; the patient has a tooth that is extremely discoloured; the patient wants a dental crown for aesthetic reasons; the patient has undergone root canal surgery, and a crown is required to cap the affected tooth; the patient has a missing tooth and requires dental crowns on either side of a dental bridge.
The procedure for installing a crown usually takes up to two separate dental visits. The first appointment will be focused on examining the tooth and filing it down to prepare for the crown. The second appointment is for the fitting and cementing of the crown onto the prepared tooth. There are several types of dental crowns that can be used. However, at Veeran Dental, we use porcelain and ceramic dental crowns to give our patients an aesthetically pleasing smile.
